First of all, the positive points of the book: much as in books about the American western railroads, this work has fascinating insights on the great effort that went into the attempt to build a railroad linking the northern and southern ends of the African continent through "red" territory... the colonies on the map which belonged to Great Britain. The railroads tell a story of hardship, ingenuity, courage, war, danger and adventure that spans decades. Tabor also writes magnificently about railroad travel back in the days of ladies and gentlemen braving the recently-conquered jungles of Africa. Not to mention the very real dangers of lions and other predators to those who built the railroads. It is great material. The collection of photographs and other contemporary images do an excellent job of illustrating the book. With that being said, the book does tend to repeat itself, as if each chapter were written as a seperate article and later on combined together as one work. Also, there are a few typos which tend to distract. In addition, one really good map, perhaps with dates of road completion, would have been a helpful feature in this book. I found this book well worth the effort, however. It should especially appeal to railway buffs.
