UndSo Weiter 339 PART I EXPANDING CITY Chapter i It Seems Like Chicago G CHICAGO, according to the experts, is a city that took root in a swamp about 1826, grew to noticeable size before 1890 and reached its ultimate magnificence day before yesterday. Some observers may take issue with this pronouncement on the ground that there is nothing ultimate about the magnificence, that the old town is going to be much more magnificent tomorrow. But nobody quar rels much with the troubadours who continue to sing a song about the old days having been pretty good. Chicago today is truly an inspiring sight, although you mar have a little trouble getting around in it. It is filled with tall build ings which most of the citizenry forget were the invention of a local architect. It has parks and playgrounds and grandiose boule vards. It is administered by a large choir of politicians of no doubt noble character, entertained largely by television, concerts, moving pictures and outdoor sports, and fed by thousands of restaurants which, one may admit, are just about the same as those of any other big city. As one looks back through a memory not too much strained, it seems to be more crowded than it was in the days when Lake View and Jackson Park were vacant lots. But its transporta tion system which was terrific then is terrific now. ii CHICAGO MEDIUM RAJRE It is difficult for even the most enthusiastic citizen to realize that Chicago was not always as it is now. Its earliest settlers were fired with the idea that they were founding a community that would be important enough to last forever. They aroused the laughter of the lake and river towns by their boastfulness. They were long the stock joke of New Yo --This text refers to the Paperback edition.
