Reader Reviews
The map provides detailed coverage of most of the city. Possibly its most helpful feature is the detailed mapping of subway stations. It doesn't hurt that the map shows subways under construction, since these projects are very visible on the surface. A few cautions are necessary. First, Taiwan has been very slow to standardize the transliterations of Chinese locality names. Just because the map says a street is named "Beiping" is no guarantee that street signs will spell the word the same way. Second, there's the perhaps inevitable errors. The Su-Ho Memorial Museum (which showcases traditional papermaking) is directly on Chang-An E. Road, not on a back alley lane. The National Taiwan University's main street is not "NTU Coconut Tree Blvd". It's Royal Palm Blvd., lined by majestic Royals. Shandao Temple is located on the wrong side of Lin-Sen Road North. The Kuang Hua market is better known as Guanghua. And while the map points out the computer stores, it misses the jade market across Song-Jiang Road. But the map's information on hiking trails, shopping areas, markets, and such is extremely helpful. Kind of astonishingly, it seems to show airport shuttle bus stops accurately. It's a handy resource for exploring a city of many distinct neighborhoods. For what it's worth, Taipei has gone to a lot of effort to make street signs, public transportation, and other facilities easy-to-use for English-speaking visitors.
